You will be captivated and fascinated by the intensive tales full of details as well as by the sudden twists, the careful build-up of tension due to unusual harmony sequences and then again the free association of dominating embellishments.
When it comes to listening to avant-garde jazz which has fairly free improvising inspired by the mood of the piece rather than strict chord changes, the easiest way to determine whether it is successful is whether the music moves the listener or not. Is the music exciting and thought-provoking or does it sound dull and random? In the case of Timuçin Şahin’s Inherence, the results are not only unpredictable and heated but quite stirring and colorful.
Born in Turkey, Timuçin Şahin started his career playing rock guitar while in high school. He moved to the Netherlands in 1992 and has since studied, taught and performed in Amsterdam and Manhattan. He has developed a unique free approach to playing both the standard electric guitar and a seven string fretless electric guitar, balancing emotional outbursts with intellectual phrases. His composing, perhaps inspired a little by early Ornette Coleman (particularly on medium-tempo pieces), sets the stage for first class soloists to create adventurous improvisations.
On Inherence, Şahin is joined by altoist John O’Gallagher, trumpeter Ralph Alessi, bassist Christopher Tordini and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. The music includes both medium-tempo romps and spacey ballads that contrast sound with silence (a la the Art Ensemble of Chicago). O’Gallagher in particular is in superior form although all of the musicians have their opportunities to shine. The group improvising on “Inherence” and the fiery solos on “My Left Foot” are among the highpoints of this consistently fascinating music.

It is said that there are guitarists who play especially conspicuous or bizarre guitar models to underline how "cool" they are. However, such silly motives can be excluded completely in the case of Timuçin Şahin. His sole motive is the enhancement of his own possibilities for structuring his music, which the two guitar necks of his custom-made model give him: one with frets and one without. "It is a very unconventional sound. But you first have to master the vocabulary on a fretless guitar before you can really get going on it," Timuçin stated in an interview. On his second CD at Between the Lines (following 'Bafa', BTLCHR 71221, 2009), his influences and ideas can be heard again, which range from his intensive studies of south Indian music and the harmonics of Ornette Coleman to his enthusiasm for rock bands from Led Zeppelin to Van Halen They are not used for cliché-type copies, but instead are very subtle. You have to listen very closely to understand the stories that Şahin tells.
