In fashion circles, the adjective “bespoke” denotes custom-made suits and shirts and signifies the person who designs and constructs them. On The Bespoke Man’s Narrative, his brilliant Mack Avenue Records debut, pianist Aaron Diehl extrapolates this notion to matters of musical invention.
  • Music composed and arranged using the strategies of bandleaders like John Lewis and Duke Ellington and brilliantly applied into contemporary context
  • In Indianapolis Diehl, 26, earned first place in the rigorous Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz competition presented by the American Pianists Association
  • Addressing a Fazioli F-228 grand piano, Aaron showcases a nuanced touch, a comfort zone with tempos ranging from rubato to brisk, encyclopedic harmonic knowledge, an abiding sense of blues expression and a will—when necessary—to swing
  • The CD also features the 30-ish all-stars—vibraphonist (and Mack Avenue artist) Warren Wolf, bassist David Wong and drummer Rodney Green
Aaron Diehl’s "The Bespoke Man's Narrative" puts new spin on modern jazz quartet. [Examiner.com]

The hot, young 2011 Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz could’ve gone in any creative direction for his first album on Mack Avenue Records (a payoff of the win). Aaron Diehl, 27, went back in time to a period where big band and be bop were kings and a neoclassical pianist by the name of John Lewis enacted a Renaissance of improvisational jazz and structured chamber music.
