In his piano works, Prokofiev associates his modern musical vocabulary with classical forms and ingenious wit. The lyricism in his music remains expressive without ever becoming unduly sentimental. The structures are crystal-clear, thought out in every detail. Each piece bears Prokofiev’s personal, unmistakable stylistic mark.

All of these tendencies are contained in nuce in Prokofiev’s piano works at a very early stage: he managed to create his personal musical style ever since youth. Thus in the initial third of his output we can already find several everlasting masterworks.
