One can imagine the wealth of influence Pietro must have come across while working in New York. On ‘Forgotten Dreams,’ Pietro displays a commanding alto workout, often reciting complex unison lead lines with guitarist Ben Monder thus thickening the sound. Obviously comfortable within his own compositional structures, Pietro shows the listener the limitless harmonic and rhythmic possibilities of this horn. His arrangements are advanced and at times modal, allowing the quintet to extend upon the musical directions and interplay. Pianist Kenny Werner was certainly the pianist for this date, as well as the solid foundation established by Dave Holland and Bill Stewart. Their presence is strong, yet not overbearing. Bill Stewart is practically a household name. His keen sense of time and tasteful, percussive embellishments is a sound to behold. Probably one of the greatest upright bassist ever, Dave Holland embraces each Pietro tune as if it were his own. A brilliant, young musician and composer has arrived, and A-Records has captured him on compact disc.
