Philharmonic Chamber Soloists, a chamber group of virtuoso musicians from the New York Philharmonic, present a historic re-recording of the 1942 Decca release of original songs by Jerome Kern, arranged for string quartet by Hollywood arranger Charles Miller Also on this album are eight magnificent selections from the American Songbook arranged in the 1940s by Wladimir Selinsky for his NBC radio show, “Strings in Swingtime”. This is the first time these arrangements have been recorded; in addition to string quartet, the performances feature guest artists from the New York Philharmonic on bass, harp, and vibraphone. "For me, it conjured up the memory of the 1937 Hollywood version in which Irene Dunne sings “Yesterdays,” with its incredibly poignant beauty, to Madame Roberta, the title character, as she drifts away peacefully into her final sleep, caressed by the song – one of the truly great moments in motion pictures. The encore track at the end is a Paul Schwartz arrangement of Jerome Kern‟s “Long Ago and Far Away,” deepening the prevalent mood of nostalgia for an era in which classical musicians could still be moved and inspired by the popular music of the day." –Audio Video Club of Atlanta |
