On Thursday 15 March, at 4:15 pm, a special radio broadcast took place, live from the Waalse Kerk in Amsterdam, which can be listened to on MeloMe. Under the name of Hemel en Aarde (Heaven and Earth), Ton Koopman, the maestro of early music, selected a number of pieces from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and arranged them into a one hour children’s concert.
Ton Koopman made this production in collaboration with Marieke Koopman (his daughter) and Boudewijn Scholten. He chose a concise selection of choruses and aria’s from the St. Matthew Passion and performs them exactly like Bach devised it, with choir, soloists and orchestra. Actress Marieke Koopman plays the daughter of the prefect Pontius Pilatus, she ask her father probing questions about Jesus’ fate: dilemma’s made palpable for children with the beautiful music of Bach.
